http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/how-to-secure-your-home-on-a-budget 2018-02-16T14:38:00+11:00 2018-11-20T14:39:44+11:00 How to secure your home on a budget! Kristie Sutherland

Lets face it... It's tough this day and age in Australia. A mortgage these days is beyond what we ever thought it could be, that and living costs it just seems to be on the rise and we can never get ahead.

And then someone comes along and thinks they have the right to just take what isn't theirs and we step backwards. Only to suck up our loss and work harder to repay the debt.

It's a sad but true story in Australia. Lets face it, majority of us have home insurance right? But our access is usually around $1,000 correct? And who has that kinda spare cash lying around so we can cover the loss of a theft? Not many.

It can be heart breaking to find someone has damaged your pride and joy, not to mention the emotional damage of someone entering your private, safe zone and going through your personal things.

We have compiled a list of things you can do to keep your home and belongings safe... on a budget... because we don't think anyone should have to have their belongings.... hard worked for belongings... taken away from them!

- Secure windows with window locks. These can be purchased from places like Bunnings for approx $4.90 for a pack of 2 - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ikonic-aluminium-sliding-window-lock-2-pack_p4224553

- Make sure the doors are always locked, when you leave the home. It is also great practise to lock the screen doors whilst home.

- Consider a dog (but be aware they come with alot of responsibility, so think carefully before doing this). But if this is something you and our family can commit to they can be great at alerting you and also scaring away thieves, them moving onto an easier target.

- Security Window Stickers. Even if you do not have a security system installed, these can also act as a deterrant.

- Tell neighbours if you are going away to keep an eye on things. Have your neighbours phone numbers in your phone to be able to contact them.

- If you are going out, make it look like someone is home. Leave a radio on. Leave 1 or 2 lights on.

At the end of the day a home security system and/or home surveillance CCTV camera's are the best way to go. Especially if you can buy and install yourself. Call it a robber stopper if you like. Its the safest home security you can get. Considering it may cost you around $500-$1000 (depending on what security system or CCTV kit you go with) this price is usually less then the cost of our insurance access, but gives us the peace of mind our home IS secure and won't be compromised.

The alarm will go off to scare away any intruders, and you are alerted by an SMS on your phone. If you did have the camera's you can then use these to log in and check the property and either head around or send the police. Majority of the time an alarm system is all that's needed, the sound of the siren instantly has them running scared and saves your home or business from a robbery.

So tighten up the security of your property and put some things into place before it's to late and you are having to deal with theft. Unfortunately at some point it happens to us all. So better to be prepared, safe and ready then sorry.

We really hate the fact that ALOT of our customers are people who have had to go through this heartbreak of the emotional and physical stress, because the property hadn't been secured at the beginning. It is always better to be prepared and avoid these situations, then having to pick up the pieces and put something in place after the fact. The damage has been done then and it's too late. We hate hearing what our customers have gone through. Be prepared and ahead of the crime, unfortunately it is real and on the rise.

Let's all work together to stop these rising crime rates in Australia, together we can all make a difference.

You may or may not be aware that Telstra closed its 2G network on the 1st of December 2016. Since this closure all 2G devices no longer work on the 2G network (except select remote areas) using the Telstra service. People can continue to use Optus or Vodafone until those networks are also shut down during 2017.

We upgraded our DIY wireless alarm system in April/May 2016 to a 3G alarm system called The Protector Series II. Meaning our wireless DIY alarm system can operate on the 3G/4G networks.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/why-install-a-wireless-home-alarm-system 2016-06-20T00:00:00+10:00 2018-11-21T11:07:12+11:00 Why install a wireless home alarm system? Kristie Sutherland

Why install a wireless alarm system? Well, when a home has been built chasing wires for a hard wired alarm system can be costly. If you have had a quote from a security install company you will see what we mean.

If you are building a home, we would always recommend a hard wired system as you do not have to worry about battery changes etc in your sensors. Whilst the home is in construction you can get a security company or electrician to chase the wires for you before the walls are enclosed. This saves alot on install costs.

If you have an existing home or office, chasing wires throughout can be a nightmare and hence cost you the big bucks. An easy way around this is by installing a wireless security system.

A wireless security system will give you the same protection as a hard wired system, accept the sensors will require battery maintenance. Depending on the sensor this can be every 6mths to 2yrs.

If you decide to move you can also take your wireless alarm system with you. So you also don't loose money there either.

Overall a hard wired system is less maintenance. However any security system requires regular check ups to make sure that it is working as it should, just to be sure that one day when it is needed it will do it's job.

The wireless alarm is the cheapest and overall easiest option. Our very own The Protector Series wireless security system also comes with the option to monitor your security system by either sticking a SIM card into the back panel or connecting an existing phone line. This allows you to receive calls and texts when the system has been violated. You also have the option to set up back to base monitoring with a company of your choice if you wish.

The best bit. We don't lock you into any contracts. Once you have purchased your wireless security system it is yours with no ongoing costs from us.

Check out our wireless alarm systems here.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/setting-up-your-system-to-stop-false-alarms 2016-03-14T00:00:00+11:00 2018-11-21T11:04:50+11:00 Setting up your security system to stop false alarms! Kristie Sutherland

Setting up a DIY security system may take some time to get right if you are unsure of where to position your PIR motion sensors.

This is why we provide our customers with technical phone support 7 days a week. You can give our tech guys a call and ask them any questions you may have on positioning of the PIRs. They will help and guide you on the best way to install.

We also explain in our user manual on positioning etc.

Sometimes we get awesome customers who take the time to write in to us. We love it!! This time we had a customer tell us some important points from a non-installer, everyday, kinda customers point of view. We appreciate this as it helps our customers understand from there own perspective.

We will paste below there suggestions when installing your PIR sensors.

I have had our security system for a couple for months now and it is a good system and easy to set up initially, but I've had some trouble with false alarms from the PIRs.  I believe I have them solved now and thought that my experience might be of help to others.

To get my system to stop false alarming took some trial and error following is a summary of the main points that have helped me stop them.

1   Install new batteries in the PIRs

2   Make sure that all PIRs do not face any windows / doors even if they have curtains or blinds

3   Do not install a PIR anywhere in a room that has windows on the western wall in Queensland, the afternoon sun is very hot and will heat the room up enough to false alarm.  This even occurred with the use of very expensive "heat proof" blinds

4   Do not face a PIR towards a fridge, particularly the old style ones that have the cooling coils on the back as these get quite hot when the fridge turns on.

5   Set your external siren timer to 0 minutes!   The last thing you want is to have your security system "crying wolf" while you are getting it working correctly.

6   Thoroughly test your installation, I'd recommend 48 continuous hours of testing.  If all goes well then reset your external siren to an appropriate time, I use 3 minutes as if there is a breakin I want to let my neighbours know so they can have a look or call the police.  By the way I get on very well with my neighbours and we have Neighbourhood Watch working in our area very well.

Again, we appreciate the time our customer went to help others whilst installing and testing there system.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/is-the-closure-of-2g-going-to-affect-people-with-a-gsm-alarm-system 2016-01-06T00:00:00+11:00 2018-11-21T11:02:46+11:00 Is the closure of 2G going to affect people with a GSM alarm system? Kristie Sutherland

We have had this question pop up from a few customers so we thought we would update our blog on what we know and keep it up to date as we find out more information for you guys.

As far as we know they keeping the 850 mhz frequency. (Our system The Protector Series runs off 850, 900, 1800 and 1900mhz and changes automatically)

We have spoken with Telstra about the matter and they advised us that 2G would be closing. But after hearing a few different rumours, we are actually going to look further into what is actually happening and speak to more telephone companies to find out what exactly is going on.

From our research Telstra will be shutting 2G in December 2016. Optus will follow on February 2017. Vodafone have not yet announced a date.

Any updates or information we find out, we will keep up to date right here on our Blog. If you would like to stay in the loop about this please subscribe to it or keep an eye on our website for more updates. We will update as we learn more.

Update

5th April, 2016

We have been working closely with our manufacturing team and are ahead of the game releasing our new 3G system within the next month or so.

This will assure our customers that when the 2g (GSM) networks are closed, our new model "The Protector Series II" will be fully compatible with the 3G/4G networks and will continue to give our customers access to monitoring their system via either SIM card or PSTN phone line.

We will be keeping our first model "The Protector Series" in stock and available ongoing, for customers who wish to purchase a system, but not necessarily want the monitoring side or wish to use a PSTN phone line instead of the 3G/4G network.

The Protector Series II will also be coming with a few upgraded features. We will be keeping all of the existing functions and features of The Protector Series, but will be adding a temperature display on the LCD screen and also the option to add smart power sockets to any of your home appliances, or lights to remotely control (to make people think someone is home whilst you are away) via the alarm panel.

Existing Customers -

As The Protector Series operates on 850Mhz we are still not 100% sure if this will affect your system or not (depending on your area). You could upgrade your panel now to get prepared, or wait and see if you are affected in your area when these closures happen.

The new model "The Protector Series II" will be compatible with all existing accessories to make the change over easy for our existing customers.

For any existing customers who wish to upgrade there security system to the new 3G model, you may do so for a low upgrade fee. Check out our shop for pricing etc.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/self-monitored-wireless-alarm-systems-monitor-yourself-and-save-thousands 2014-03-19T00:00:00+11:00 2018-11-21T10:58:11+11:00 Self-Monitored Wireless Alarm Systems - Monitor yourself and save thousands!!! Kristie Sutherland

Alot of people don't like security systems, dealing with putting the pin code in before the alarm starts sounding can panic people. But in the long run a working security system can keep you so much safer when you are home and also protect your belongings and everything you have worked hard for when you are out!

Our wireless alarm systems are the best out there for the price range. Of course you can go and spend thousands on a top notch brand that you may get an extra year out of. But we find our systems highly competes with the high price tag products, in quality and the features. We even like to think we may have more features.

And then there are the monitoring costs to consider. Our wireless alarm systems can be self-monitored (saving you thousands over the years) or if you do prefer the use of a monitoring company the option is there to do that too. Simply enter your monitoring details into the panel and easily program it to suit your needs.We have done some calculations on monitoring costs.

It is interesting to see really how much money you can save monitoring your wireless alarm system yourself.

Monitoring companies all over Australia vary in price and are all different, so we will use averages over a 3yr period.

Monitoring Company

$1 a day, for 365 days a year = $365 a year.

$365 for 3 years is $1,095

Just on monitoring for your alarm system.

Self-Monitor your Alarm System

$5 for a start up SIM card (including $5 of credit - see example) plus the cost of sending a text message or a phone call, when someone has violated your property. Which isn't likely to be very often (or never, hopefully - but always better to be safe then sorry).

OR if you have an existing phone line, your cost is nothing! You will only pay for the phone call when your alarm has been violated.

You do the sums? Do you want to pay for monitoring even when you arn't using it or needing it? Or would you rather pay as it is needed?

If you choose a long 365 day expiry SIM card then your credit will last you the entire year, without needing to top up at the end of each month. So unless you have other alerts set up on your system, you won't use much credit at all.

Another great bonus about having a self monitored alarm is that you can send your wireless alarm system text messages to arm and disarm. Say you are on your way to work and you forgot to arm the alarm, no worries.. Simply send your alarm a text message and it will reply telling you it has been armed successfully.

Our wireless alarm systems include a SIM dialer. If you have researched your alarms, you would realise that this function alone can cost you around $600 or more. We have jam packed the best features and only the highest in quality and design to provide you with The Protector Series. Australia's No.1 wireless alarm system. Only available online and comes with a 2yr replacement warranty, money back guarantee and free technical support.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/what-to-do-if-my-home-is-broken-into 2014-02-04T00:00:00+11:00 2018-11-21T10:56:11+11:00 What to do if my home is broken into? Kristie Sutherland

What if my home has been burgled? What should you do if someone broke in? What if they took everything?

The feeling of safety seems to decrease after a home invasion. Wether you were home or not, it is a very sick feeling to know somebody has been in your home, going through your personal stuff.

Unfortunately alot of people call us up looking for a security system, after they have been broken into. The insurance companies say that someone is more likely to come back a few weeks after the break and enter for a second go at it.

The best solution is to prevent a break and enter happening with a working security system, but this isn't always the case.

So what should you do if you have been broken into?

  1. Don't touch anything!

  2. Call the police to file a report.

  3. Take photo's of any evidence.

  4. Check that no credit cards or bank cards were taken. If they were call the banks and cancel the cards.

  5. Phone your insurance company to advise them of the situation and find out what is needed to make a claim.

  6. Check no keys to the house or cars are missing. If they are consider changing the locks.

  7. Start an inventory of what is missing. Keep the list out and add to it over the next few days as you notice other things missing.

  8. If you are renting, advise the real estate agency or landlord to advise them of the home burglary.

  9. Let your neighbours know so they can be more prepared and keep things locked up tighter.

  10. Take some time to try to de-stress.

It is a very emotional time when you have been robbed or broken into. Take the time to de-stress and remember that at least (well hopefully) no-one was hurt.

In future, it's best to prevent the crime before it happens. A working security system is always the best deterance to any burglar. They usually go to the easiest property and seeing an external siren and warning stickers is usually enough to deter the thieves. However, if they did break into the property the noise of the alarm being set off would most certainley scare them away.

If you still can't get past someone breaking in, speak to your doctor and/or make sure you talk to your family and friends.

Check out our alarm kits here and save thousands with our quality monitored DIY security systems.

Our Monitored alarms can save you hundreds in monitoring costs. Even thousands if you count all the years you have paid for monitoring.

Wouldn't you rather monitor your alarm yourself? Meaning no monitoring costs and you know exactly whats happening, when it happens!

Our monitored alarms give you the choice of being a GSM alarm or a PSTN alarm. If you have already got an alarm system and you have looked into adding a GSM dialer to it, you will realise just for the dialer can cost you anywhere from $600 up to $1,000 sometimes even more.

If you decide to use the system as a GSM alarm you may program up to 5 phone numbers into it. Being a GSM alarm system you can then receive SMS or calls when the alarm has been violated. A GSM alarm has more options with the SMSing. You may also receive alerts if there has been a power outage, or a sensors battery is low.

It you use your alarm as a PSTN alarm you can still program up to 5 phone numbers for monitoring however you may only receive a call when the alarm has been violated.

GSM alarms are the way to the future. They are portable and being wireless makes them even easier to install.

If you love the convenience and safety of a Central Monitoring Centre you also have the option to use one.

Giving you many options with our GSM alarm systems, you can decide how you use your monitored alarm.

Are you looking for a great Christmas gift idea? How about giving the gift of safety.

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift idea, look no further. Give your mum or dad, son or daughter, nan or pop the gift of feeling safe and secure in there own home.

Going on holidays this Christmas? Most of us Aussies love to get away, whether it's a camping trip on our beautiful coast lines - which we personally love to do as a family - or a trip into the middle of nowhere. You maybe living it up in a flashy apartment in the city or taking it easy with your swag. Whatever the case may be, you don't want to have to worry about if your home is safe and secure. Especially in the holiday times, when home break-ins increase.

Set up your home with a working security system before you go away so your mind is completely at ease. Knowing that if there was an intruder, you would know about it the second it happened. Allowing you to call on a family member or friend to go and check it out.

Ok, so Im going to tell you a little story about our last holiday and it just reminded us how awesome The Protector Series really is.

We were all excited but rushed as we where packing the car for our family holiday to Fiji earlier this year. As most families would know, getting the kids ready, packed and managing to get out the door and be at the airport on time is a mission in itself. So we finally did it, we where on our way. About a 2hr car ride to the airport in traffic and we have to be there in 2hrs. No time for delays here. Half way down to Sydney airport we realised we forgot to turn on the alarm. We both slightly cringed and thought a whole week away, with no car in the driveway.... Perfect for a home break-in. After both of us starting to get more frustrated with the situation, and not thinking clearly, I remembered.... I can send the alarm a text msg to turn it on. I pulled out my phone, sent the text msg to the alarm and I get an instant reply "Arm OK". Now we could both really relax and enjoy our holiday completely. Which we did ;-)

The Protector Series is the perfect Christmas present, even to yourself. Feel safe this holiday season and secure your home with our DIY alarm system. Easy enough for any novice to install. With our free technical support and 2yr warranty you can't go wrong.

Want to give a kit as a Christmas present? We will even wrap it for free! Did you want it posted straight to them, but no price details? We can do that too. Just comment your instructions and we will communicate with you until we have it just the way you want it.

Until next time, enjoy the start of the Christmas celebrations.

A large number of break and enter crimes are easily preventable. By introducing a number of
 simple and inexpensive changes to your home, you can play an active role in reducing the chances of this happening to you. By securing your home you significantly lower the risk of you and your family becoming victims of crime. Burglary can have a serious impact on families and individuals in a number of different ways.

  • Display street number at the front of the house to assist emergency services to locate your home;

  • Ensure all perimeter fences are in good order and that gates are kept closed and locked to restrict unauthorised access to your property;

  • Trim trees and shrubs from around doors and windows so as not to provide concealment to intruders and increase visibility to and from the street;

  • Install quality security lights around the perimeter of your home to provide more effective illumination at night;

  • The power board to your home should be housed within a metal cabinet secured with an electricity authority lock to restrict tampering;

  • All perimeter doors to your home should be of solid construction and fitted with quality dead lock sets to restrict unauthorised access to the home;

  • All perimeter windows should be secured with key operated locks to restrict unauthorised access;

  • Glass within doors and windows should be reinforced by either adhering a shatter resistant film, replacing with laminated glass or having quality metal security grilles or shutters fitted to restrict unauthorised access;

  • Record descriptions, models and serial numbers of all your valuables to assist in easy identification should they be reported lost or stolen;

  • Engrave your driver’s licence number prefixed by the initials “NSW” on all items of value again to assist in easy identification;

  • Photograph jewellery and other collectables for easy identification.

  • Consider having a monitored intruder alarm system installed. Obtain at least three quotes from licensed security companies;

  • Garages should be locked to restrict access. Roller tilt and panel lift doors can be secured with additional lock sets in the form of hasp and staple or padlocks;

  • Garden sheds should be securely anchored to the ground to prevent lifting. A suitable lock set should also be fitted;

  • Garden tools, equipment and ladders should be locked away when not in use to prevent them being used to gain access to your home.

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/monitored-alarm-system-self-monitoring-or-central-monitoring-company 2013-10-13T00:00:00+11:00 2018-11-20T15:04:53+11:00 Monitored Alarm System - Self Monitoring or Central Monitoring company? Kristie Sutherland

We get asked quite often how the alarm monitoring works?

With our Wireless DIY Monitored Alarm systems you may decide which you would like to use for your monitoring. You need to ask yourself, which do you prefer... To monitor yourself by receiving an sms or phone call when violated. OR would you prefer a monitoring company take care of this for you? It really is personal choice!

Lets go through both options...

Self-Monitor your wireless alarm system
You may program your alarm system to suit your own personal needs in regards to monitoring. You can plug in an existing phone line or put a SIM card into the back of the alarm.

Let's say you are going on holidays. You can program your phone number into the alarm to txt or call you when violated, but you may also add a close family member or friends mobile number that you trust. This way they can go around and inspect the home or office for you whilst you are not in the area. You can add up to 5 phone numbers. Once the alarm has been violated, it starts it's job. It alerts the phone numbers you have entered, in order from 1 to 5.

It will always make you aware if the alarm is violated, when you have phone numbers programmed in.

You may choose which extra alerts you would like to receive, you can choose from the following -
* Power recover
* Arm & Disarm SMS
* PSTN off or on
* Panel low power
* Sensors low power

Ever go on holidays? Get half way there and realise you forgot to set your alarm? Don't worry, you can arm & disarm your alarm by sending the alarm panel an SMS. It will reply when armed.

We highly recommend using a SIM card as you can use the sms options. When you use an existing PSTN (phone line) you may only receive calls from the alarm and you can't text your alarm.

If you are using a PSTN line you can only receive phone calls when the alarm has been violated. It will not be physically able to send or receive a txt from it as this line is voice only.

The cost for self-monitoring is simply a phone call or SMS from your telephone company. You only pay for what you use and you know exactly what is happening with your system.

Central Monitoring company
Central-stations use special telephone lines, computers, software and trained staff to monitor their customers' security systems and call the appropriate authorities in the event an alarm signal is received.

Typically, there is a fee for these services (They can start at $1 per day). Because quality and experience can vary greatly among alarm companies, prospective customers are well advised to do their own research before making a final choice. Not all alarm companies monitor the systems they install and may outsource these services to another company.

In Australia Central Stations are graded on 2 areas: operational and physical performance. Operational performance includes the ability of the monitoring system to respond to events - generated by customers' security systems, operational reliability, data retrieval, etc. Physical performance includes measures such as the construction of monitoring rooms - most high security rooms have airlocks which can only be operated internally. The highest standard is 1a to 3c. To be graded at 3c central stations still meet very high standards.

The best thing about our monitored alarm systems is, in the end the decision is up to you. With our alarm systems, you are not locked to anyone. If you change your mind later, it's easy!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on .

http://www.australiansecuritysystems.com.au/blogs/news/why-install-a-diy-alarm-from-australian-security-systems 2013-08-15T00:00:00+10:00 2018-11-20T14:59:51+11:00 Why install a DIY alarm from Australian Security Systems? Kristie Sutherland

Firstly, to save you approximately $500-$1,000 just on the installation costs. Someone wants good money to climb through your roof or slide under the house to run wires. It's fiddly and dirty work!

We spend all of our time working and making sure we have the best for our kids, but most families cannot afford the extra's likes a security system. We don't think it should be classed as an extra. Every family should protect what they have worked so hard for. And we understand today's tight budgets.

Now, we quite often get asked "Why are your alarm systems so cheap?" We can guarantee you we do not scrimp on quality, technology or any features in anyway! Our aim is to supply quality DIY security systems, that are easy to install and come with great customer service when needed. You are buying directly through us - the source, so there is no middle man. There are also no installation costs, saving you ALOT of money just there. We are an internet operated business - meaning we do not have a shopfront, allowing us to cut costs even more to supply our customers with quality products at low prices everyday!

So now your maybe thinking I can't possibly install a security system correctly? On my own? Well.. you can! Our security systems are designed for the complete novice to DIY. There are no complicated wires to run - we use Secure Wireless Technology - making is so easy for you to install yourself. Our user manual has been written to follow a bouncing ball from start to finish. And we can guarantee that you will be blown away just how easy it actually was to install and program.

Want more options later? You can add accessories to your alarm at any time. Its easy!

You also may have noticed we have free technical phone support on all products. This is to provide you with a great quality service from us and knowing that help is there for you when needed. But you know what... This is barely used! Most people call before placing their order questioning if they could do it themselves... After we re-assure just how easy it is, they go ahead and we never hear from them again! Unless of course it's one of our many great testimonials ;-) We do get the odd call for help (like anything), but we are always happy to help you. Need help during the day? No worries... Need help during the evening? No worries... we will work with you to get you going!

Our security systems are of excellent quality, extremely reliable, modern, have many awesome features (including a gsm dialer for monitoring). They also come with a 2yr replacement warranty for your piece of mind, free technical phone support (if you get stuck),  14 Day Money Back Guarantee and most importantly we are Australian family owned and operated.

We have had people install our wireless alarms on huge boats and connect the alarm to the bildge pump. We have customers using our security alarm systems in offices, homes, caravans, motor homes, sheds, boats, large companies, small companies, granny flats... you name it! People are blown away with the features our wireless alarms have.

Got a question? We are more than happy to help you. Give us a call on or email us anytime.

Home security alarm systems are a necessary evil in today's society. Years ago one could leave their doors unlocked and their windows open in the summer. These days, any open window on the first floor of your home is begging for a robber to jump through. There are several reasons why one should have a home security alarm system in the home aside from the obvious.

Home Security Alarm Systems Provide Peace of Mind
Having your own home security alarm system in your home can provide peace of mind. We live in a consumer driven society, and it is important that we protect our stuff. Owning a home security alarm system will notify the authorities when an intruder enters your home when you are present or away.

It does not matter if one lives in suburbia or in the downtown of a city, crime happens everywhere. By having a home security alarm system, the knowledge in and of itself that your home is protected will grant you and your family peace of mind.

Home Security Alarm Systems Provide Safety
It is clear that owning a home security alarm system provides safety in your home. The last place that one should have to worry about his or her own safety is in the own home. In addition to detecting intruders, most home security alarm systems can be hooked up to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

There are generally one push buttons on a home security alarm system keypad for contacting the police, fire station, and poison control. These additional features of a home security alarm system provide additional safety to one's home.

Home Security Alarm Systems Can Lower Your Homeowner's Insurance
The benefits to owning a home security alarm system in your house can outweigh the costs. Many insurance agencies will give a discount to homeowners who install a home security alarm system.

After having a home security alarm system installed in your home, your insurance provider  could discount your yearly premium by almost five hundred dollars! The savings you can make on your insurance plan can be greater than the cost of the security system itself. Not only will you end up saving money, you will also feel safer.

As the owner of a caravan, motorhome or camper trailer you should be constantly vigilant in the protection of your rig and its contents.

Australia has one of the highest rates of vehicle theft in the western world. On average, one in every seventy Australian households had a vehicle stolen in the last twelve months. Almost 100,000 vehicles are stolen each year and around one-quarter will never be recovered.

With the massive boom in caravan ownership in Australia in recent years, caravans are now prime targets for thieves and it is estimated that around 500 or so touring caravans are reported stolen each year in Australia, representing a major inconvenience to their owners.

The implications of a stolen caravan, RV or camper trailer can be devastating financially but it can also be very emotional for the individuals involved. Regardless of your level of insurance, you are bound to be inconvenienced significantly by theft, be it of your entire rig or of just the contents from within.

The first steps to avoiding theft begin with ensuring you follow a few simple commonsense security routines to deter thieves in the first place.

Park Safe

When you are touring with your caravan, always be conscious of where you park – even if just for a quick stop. Some towns will have specific parking sites approved by the police, so take heed of any such indicators.

When leaving a van or trailer unattended and unhitched from your tow vehicle, always try to park with the drawbar facing towards a wall, gutter or difficult access point. This may require physically moving your unhitched trailer 180 degrees however this inconvenience could be the ideal deterrent to opportune thieves who might otherwise be able to simply back up their vehicle and hitch up your trailer and drive away.

Immobilisers

If you are taking a brief halt somewhere, do not neglect the important task of immobilising your RV.

Keep Valuables out of Sight

Do not keep valuable items lying around or in sight. If these are small enough to carry, take them with you. Always lock up if you are going out, including windows and draw the curtains. If possible, store any high-value items such as generators inside the van when not in use whilst you are out, rather than in an annexe with no hard walls.

Automatic lights

A light activated switch is a simple precaution to avoiding caravan theft. These switch on automatically when it is dark. This would give the impression that the caravan is occupied even when it isn’t.

VIN number protection

Most thieves wipe out the registration or VIN numbers from a stolen caravan to escape detection and enable resale to an unsuspecting buyer. To maximise the chance of reclaiming your van should it be stolen, it would be useful to have these numbers written or etched in various places in the caravan. For example, labelling the underside of drawers, in cupboards and on other areas of bare wood will help the police to identify a touring caravan if it is ever stolen. Obviously, the method of labelling should be permanent and not easy to remove or disguise.

With the advancement of technology, the identification system in caravan security has undergone many improvements. There is a system in which very small discs, the size of a grain of sand, are etched with a code having a number of lines. These tiny dots are sprayed or even brushed on your RV or camper van or caravan. These dots contain the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that are invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen under UV light.

Security stickers should be placed prominently to warn thieves that the vehicle is registered and can be easily identified if stolen.

Buyer Beware

If you are buying a used caravan, take consideration of any suspicious indicators that might mean the van is stolen. Be wary if it’s out of registration; ask to see proof of ownership paperwork; and consider looking up the VIN number on any stolen vehicle registers in your state.

Neighborhood Watch

If there are other caravan owners about who are your floating neighbours, have an informal agreement with them to keep an eye out for suspicious activity at each other’s caravan. Remember to give them a method of contacting you quickly should the need arise (eg. mobile phone number).

Protect Valuables
Lock all windows and draw the curtains. Do not keep valuable items lying around. If these are small enough to carry, take them with you.

Evaluate your van’s contents in the same way you would your home, and take out adequate additional contents cover.

Coupling Locks & Wheel Clamp Devices
Invest in a security or locking device, such as a coupling lock or wheel clamp. There are a number of devices on the market that suit different types of situations.

Hitchlocks
A good Hitchlock will be a deterrent to thieves from opportunistic road side stops. A Hitchlock is designed to lock the caravan to the car as an integral unit. Choose a Hitchlock where the securing bolts are completely covered. If the Hitchlock bolts are exposed, it would be a cakewalk for an expert thief to unbolt the lock and fit his own in place. Remember, of course, that Hitch bolts should not be used while in transit in interest of safety.

Cons:- a Hitchlock can only be of value if you use it every time you walk away from your rig. This is often impractical when the time to attach the hitch might take longer than the time you expect to leave your rig unattended; and idle forgetfulness can render you completely exposed to the risk of theft.

Wheel Clamps
A wheel clamp of some description is essential whilst the caravan is in storage and most touring caravan insurance companies insist that some form of wheel clamping is used to comply with the exclusions in the policy.

Wheel clamps simply clamp the wheels of your RV and prevent it from being driven away. There are many models of wheel clamps. Some are made of hardened steel and fit up to 290 mm size of tyres. Many come with a 25 year guarantee and are designed to fit all wheels so your initial investment may be used for any future vans or RVs that you buy in the future.

Locking Wheel Nuts

Locking wheel nuts won’t stop your vehicle from being stolen but they do a great job in protecting your wheels from being removed. These bolts are a great investment if you have a new and desirable set of alloy wheels fitted to your vehicle, van or trailer, but can equally protect your tyres which are particularly expensive nowadays.

Locking Bolts are a simple idea – you replace one retaining nut on each of your 4 wheels with a locking one, which then requires a special adaptor to be placed over the top of the nut to allow it to be released, meaning that wheels cannot be removed without this adaptor.

You’ll need to keep the adaptor in your vehicle in a secure place that thieves cannot easily find but in a place where you can locate it quickly in the event you have a flat and need to remove the wheel.

Cons:- Quality of the nuts = ease of theft. Some organized criminals make master copies of the adaptors so pay a little more for a more complicated design with a number of combinations.
